Revolutionary Expectations

Revolutionary Expectations

The crowd went wild when Jesus entered Jerusalem. They waved palm branches – not just any branches, but symbols loaded with political meaning. These same branches had been used during the Maccabean Revolt as flags of independence and revolution. The people were essentially declaring Jesus their revolutionary leader, expecting him to overthrow Roman rule and restore Israel’s political glory. They shouted “Hosanna!” which literally means “save us!” But they were thinking of salvation from taxes, oppression, and foreign rule. Jesus heard their cries and knew they needed a much deeper kind of saving – rescue from sin, death, and spiritual bondage. Sometimes we do the same thing. We want Jesus to fix our immediate problems, improve our circumstances, or give us what we think we need. But Jesus sees the bigger picture. He knows what we truly need for lasting freedom and abundant life, even when it’s different from what we’re asking for.

Bible Verse

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” – John 12:13

Reflection Question

In what ways might you be asking Jesus to be king on your terms rather than surrendering to his greater plan?

Prayer

Lord, help me trust that you know what I truly need better than I do. Give me faith to surrender my expectations to your perfect will.
