As Texans clean up and reflect on this past week’s terrible storms, many are asking: Where is God when bad things happen? The flooding has stolen lives, devastated families, and destroyed homes. It’s natural to wonder why God allows such pain.
These hard times can actually make our faith stronger. The book of Job in the Bible tells the story of a man who knew this truth. After Job lost his children, his money, and his health, he didn’t get angry at God. Instead, he said, “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” (Job 1:21) Job recognized an important truth: if we accept good things from God, we must also accept the hard things.
This doesn’t mean God causes storms or likes to see us suffer. We live in a broken world where floods, hurricanes, and heartbreak happen. The same God who gave Job a family and wealth also allowed those things to be taken away. The same God who gives us sunny days also allows storms that flood our streets.
Remember when Jesus was sleeping in a boat and a big storm came? His friends were terrified and woke him up. Jesus didn’t get upset with them for being scared. Instead, he commanded the wind and waves to stop. Here’s the amazing thing: even though Jesus was asleep, he was right there with them the whole time. This teaches us that when storms hit our lives, it doesn’t mean God has left us or lost control.
The storms of life—whether literal or metaphorical—show us that we’re not really in control. They remind us that real safety doesn’t come from good weather or being prepared. It comes from trusting God, who never changes. We might not understand why the storm came, but we can trust the One who controls both storms and calm weather.
As you read the headlines about the tragedy in Texas, remember both God’s goodness in keeping you safe and his power over hard times. When you accept both blessings and troubles from God, you learn that his love is what keeps you steady when everything else feels shaky.
